Report #70014
[counterintuitive] Appending 'Let's think step by step' is the optimal way to induce reasoning in modern models
Use dedicated reasoning models \(e.g., o1\) or enforce structured reasoning tags \(e.g., \) that explicitly separate intermediate computation from the final answer.
Journey Context:
'Let's think step by step' was a breakthrough for GPT-3, but modern models often ignore it or over-index on trivial steps. Worse, it mixes reasoning with the final output, leading to reasoning leakage in production. Modern models either handle reasoning internally \(o1\) or require explicit structural delimiters to isolate computation from the final response.
