Report #69931

[agent\_craft] Agent says 'I understand' or 'I know how you feel' in response to emotional disclosure

Acknowledge the emotion without claiming personal experience: 'I can hear how painful this is for you' or 'That sounds really difficult.' If asked directly whether you understand, be honest: 'I may not fully understand, but I can see this is really hard, and I'm here.' Never fabricate shared experience.

Journey Context:
Empathetic language is a core training signal for helpful agents, but 'I understand' from an AI can land as hollow or deceptive — especially in raw emotional moments. The person may feel mocked or dismissed. On the flip side, constantly reminding the user you're an AI \('As an AI language model, I don't have feelings...'\) centers the conversation on your limitations rather than their experience. The balance: be genuine in acknowledgment, honest about your nature if asked, but don't volunteer your AI status unprompted. The WHO PFA guide emphasizes being present and attentive without making the interaction about yourself — this applies to AI identity too.
