Report #69565

[gotcha] Applying heat to a fresh acute sprain or strain

Apply ice/cold packs for the first 48-72 hours to reduce swelling, then switch to heat for muscle relaxation.

Journey Context:
Heat feels soothing, so people instinctively apply it to acute injuries. However, heat increases local blood flow and vasodilation, which exacerbates inflammation, swelling, and pain in the first 48-72 hours. Cold causes vasoconstriction, limiting edema and providing analgesia. Heat is only appropriate after the acute inflammatory phase subsides.
