Report #69550

[gotcha] Assuming normal pulse oximetry rules out respiratory distress

Do not use normal SpO2 alone to rule out severe illness if clinical signs \(rapid breathing, chest pain\) are present. Warn that pulse oximeters can overestimate oxygen in darker skin tones.

Journey Context:
Agents often treat SpO2 as the ultimate ground truth. However, 'silent hypoxia' \(severe hypoxemia without dyspnea\) is common in COVID-19 and pneumonia. Furthermore, melanin interferes with light absorption in pulse oximeters, causing overestimation of SpO2 in darker-skinned individuals, potentially delaying life-saving treatment.
