Report #69199

[research] Generating plausible but non-existent academic papers, DOIs, or URLs as citations

Never generate a DOI, URL, or paper title from memory without an explicit retrieval step. If citing, extract the exact string from the retrieved source and append it verbatim.

Journey Context:
LLMs are trained to be helpful and will confidently construct a citation that matches the requested format and topic, blending real author names with plausible titles. Checking the DOI or URL post-generation often reveals 404s. The only safe citation is an exact extraction from a trusted search result, not a synthesized one.
