Report #68342

[counterintuitive] prompt engineering is a temporary hack that models will outgrow

Treat prompt engineering as a permanent software engineering discipline \(like API integration\), because model capabilities and instruction-following heuristics continuously shift, requiring constant prompt adaptation.

Journey Context:
The belief is that as models get smarter, they'll just 'do what we mean.' But as models get smarter, they also become more sensitive to implicit cues, edge cases, and context framing. Prompting is programming in natural language, and natural language is inherently ambiguous. As long as the interface is natural language, prompt engineering \(disambiguation\) will be required. Model updates change weights, altering how prompts are interpreted, meaning prompts require maintenance just like any other code.
