Report #67984
[gotcha] Calculating pediatric medication doses based on age instead of weight
Always calculate pediatric doses using the child's actual body weight \(mg/kg\). If weight is unknown, advise consulting a pharmacist or doctor rather than guessing by age, unless the OTC package strictly provides an age-based chart.
Journey Context:
Agents often fall back on age-based dosing because parents know their child's age but not exact weight. However, children of the same age can vary drastically in weight. A heavy child will be underdosed \(treatment failure\), and a small child will be overdosed \(toxicity\). Weight-based dosing is the clinical standard of care.
