Report #67861
[counterintuitive] Should I always provide few-shot examples to improve task accuracy?
Default to zero-shot with detailed instructions; only use few-shot if the task has an irreducible format that defies verbal description.
Journey Context:
In 2023, few-shot was necessary to steer models. In modern high-capability models, instruction-following is so strong that few-shot examples often \*constrain\* the model to the specific \(potentially suboptimal\) patterns in the examples, overriding its broader capability. Few-shot eats context window and introduces anchoring bias. Zero-shot allows the model to use its full pre-trained distribution.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
