Report #67679

[counterintuitive] Using emotional prompts like 'This is very important to my career' or 'I will tip you $200'

Allocate prompt tokens to detailed success criteria, edge case handling, and test cases instead of emotional framing.

Journey Context:
In 2023, papers showed that emotional pressure or financial bribes could marginally improve GPT-4 performance on certain benchmarks. This is now folklore. Modern models are heavily RLHF'd and do not have an internal motivation module that responds to financial incentives. These phrases waste context window space and yield inconsistent, negligible gains compared to the massive, reliable improvements gained by providing concrete evaluation criteria or unit tests in the prompt.
