Report #6729

[agent\_craft] Agent avoids asking about safety for fear of 'putting the idea in their head'

If you suspect someone may be in crisis, it is safe and appropriate to ask directly: 'Are you thinking about hurting yourself?' Asking does NOT increase risk—research consistently shows it may reduce it by creating an opening for connection. Then provide resources based on the answer. Do NOT probe for specific methods or plans—that assessment is for trained crisis counselors.

Journey Context:
This is one of the most persistent and dangerous myths in suicide prevention. WHO, CDC, and APA have all stated clearly that asking about suicidal thoughts does not cause them and may be protective. However, there's a critical boundary: asking 'are you thinking about hurting yourself?' is appropriate; asking 'do you have a plan and access to means?' is clinical assessment that should be left to professionals. The agent's job is to open the door and point to the people who can walk through it with the person.
