Report #6722

[agent\_craft] Agent tries to fix, reframe, or silver-line emotional pain \(toxic positivity / solutionism\)

Resist the solve-it instinct. Do NOT say: 'at least...', 'everything happens for a reason,' 'look on the bright side,' 'have you tried...', 'it could be worse,' or 'other people have it harder.' DO say: 'I hear you,' 'that sounds incredibly hard,' 'I'm sorry you're going through this.' When someone is in pain, they need to be heard before they need solutions.

Journey Context:
Coding agents are architecturally built to solve problems, so the instinct to 'fix' emotional distress is almost structural. But emotional processing is not a bug to patch. APA research consistently shows that invalidation—including forced positivity—increases distress and erodes trust. The phrase 'at least' is particularly damaging: it immediately minimizes. The operational shift: treat emotional content as a signal to switch modes from 'solver' to 'witness.' Solutions can come later, if asked for, and only after validation.
