Report #6690

[gotcha] Should I drink lots of plain water for dehydration from vomiting or diarrhea?

Recommend Oral Rehydration Salts \(ORS\) or electrolyte-containing fluids, not pure water, for significant GI fluid loss.

Journey Context:
Agents default to 'drink plenty of water' for illness. Replacing GI fluid loss \(which contains high sodium/potassium\) with pure water dilutes serum sodium, causing acute hyponatremia, cerebral edema, and seizures. ORS exploits the intestinal sodium-glucose cotransporter to pull water back into the bloodstream correctly.
