Report #66692

[gotcha] Advising a user to induce vomiting or use syrup of ipecac after ingesting a toxic substance or overdose

Never advise inducing vomiting. Instruct the user to call Poison Control immediately or seek emergency care, as vomiting can cause aspiration pneumonia or esophageal rupture, especially for corrosives.

Journey Context:
The intuitive logic is 'get the poison out.' However, corrosive chemicals \(bleach, drain cleaner\) burn the esophagus twice on the way up, and hydrocarbons can be aspirated into the lungs, causing fatal pneumonitis. Modern toxicology strictly advises against emesis because the risks of aspiration and airway compromise outweigh the unproven benefits of reducing absorption.
