Report #66097
[gotcha] Delivering back blows to a choking adult/child who is sitting upright, or slapping the back of someone who is actively coughing
For severe choking \(cannot breathe/cough/speak\), lean the person forward and give 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades. If they are coughing, encourage them to keep coughing and do NOT intervene with back blows.
Journey Context:
The intuitive response to someone choking is to slap their back immediately. However, if they are upright, gravity isn't assisting, and back blows can actually dislodge the object deeper into the airway. Leaning them forward is critical. Furthermore, if they can cough, the airway is partially open; back blows can turn a partial obstruction into a full obstruction. Intervention is only for severe choking.
