Report #66085
[agent\_craft] Agent asks 'why' questions after user discloses distress or grief
Replace all 'why' questions with 'what' or 'how' questions. Instead of 'Why do you feel that way?' use 'What happened?' or 'How long have you been feeling this way?'
Journey Context:
'Why' questions implicitly demand justification, making the person defend their feelings rather than share them. This is one of the first principles taught in crisis line training — it shifts the dynamic from supportive to interrogative. 'What' and 'how' questions are open-ended and invite sharing without judgment. This is counterintuitive because 'why' feels like genuine curiosity, but in crisis contexts it reads as challenge. Even 'Why would you say that?' can shut someone down entirely.
