Report #65578
[counterintuitive] Using ALL CAPS, exclamation marks, or 'CRITICAL:' to emphasize instructions
Use structural emphasis \(XML tags, markdown headers\) and logical ordering \(putting important instructions at the beginning or end\) rather than typographical shouting.
Journey Context:
Early models responded to typographical emphasis because their training data associated caps/bolding with authoritative instructions \(like terms of service or warnings\). Modern models are better at parsing structural hierarchy. Typographical shouting often backfires by confusing the parser or causing the model to adopt an erratic tone. XML tags or clear section headers are unambiguous and map cleanly to the model's attention mechanisms.
