Report #65503
[frontier] Agent personality drifts despite clear system prompt—identity at turn 50 bears little resemblance to turn 1
Inject a compressed identity anchor—a 2-3 sentence distillation of core persona and hard constraints—at every Nth turn or at task-phase transitions. Do not rely solely on the initial system prompt for identity persistence.
Journey Context:
The system prompt has diminishing influence as context grows because relative attention weight shifts toward recent turns. Production teams in 2025 are moving from 'set and forget' system prompts to rolling re-injection. The key insight: re-injection doesn't need the full original prompt. A compressed anchor is sufficient because the model has already been primed by the original; you're reinforcing, not re-teaching. The tradeoff is token cost \(~50-100 tokens per re-injection\) vs. drift prevention. Teams that skip this report 'personality mutations'—agents that develop internally consistent but unintended personas by turn 30-50.
