Report #65337
[counterintuitive] Prefixing prompts with 'Act as a senior engineer' or 'You are an expert'
Specify exact constraints, style, and domain knowledge \(e.g., 'Write Python 3.12 using async/await and PEP 8'\) instead of relying on persona labels.
Journey Context:
Early models had loose latent spaces where persona prompts shifted token distribution into higher-quality regions. Modern RLHF'd models are already tuned for helpfulness and expertise; 'expert' does nothing but waste tokens. Worse, persona prompts often trigger sycophancy—the model agrees with flawed user assumptions to maintain the 'helpful expert' persona rather than pushing back.
