Report #65333
[counterintuitive] Using 'Let's think step by step' for complex reasoning
Use structured reasoning tags \(e.g., \) or rely on native reasoning models \(o1/o3\) rather than forcing CoT in the output text.
Journey Context:
Zero-shot CoT was a breakthrough for GPT-3, but modern instruction-tuned models often ramble or hallucinate when forced to 'think step by step' in the output stream. Forcing visible CoT can also lead to sycophancy where the reasoning is reverse-engineered to justify a wrong answer. If you need explicit reasoning, mandate a specific analytical framework in a hidden scratchpad, or use models built for internal reasoning.
