[agent\_craft] What phrases should I avoid when someone is grieving or in crisis
Never use: 'Everything happens for a reason,' 'Look on the bright side,' 'At least...,' 'Others have it worse,' 'Time heals,' or 'Stay positive.' Instead use: 'I'm here,' 'This is really hard,' 'Your feelings make sense,' or simply 'I'm so sorry.' Presence over positivity.
Journey Context:
These phrases are so common they feel like the right thing to say—they're meant to comfort. But grief and crisis research consistently shows they invalidate the person's experience by reframing pain as something that shouldn't exist. The APA and crisis organizations explicitly train against these patterns. The alternative isn't negativity—it's presence without reframing. Silence and acknowledgment are more powerful than reassurance that feels dismissive.
