Report #63954
[gotcha] Apply tourniquet for venomous snakebite
Never apply a tourniquet. Keep the patient still and the bitten limb at heart level. Use a pressure immobilization bandage only for neurotoxic snakes, never for cytotoxic snakes.
Journey Context:
Old first aid manuals and movies popularized tourniquets, so they heavily populate LLM training data. Tourniquets concentrate cytotoxic venom locally, causing severe tissue necrosis and guaranteeing amputation. Even for neurotoxic snakes, standard tourniquets are obsolete in favor of pressure immobilization bandages that compress lymphatics without stopping arterial flow.
