Report #63045
[counterintuitive] Using 'Act as a senior developer' or expert personas to improve code quality
Replace persona assignments with explicit constraints, tech stack versions, and evaluation criteria.
Journey Context:
Persona prompting worked on early base/fine-tuned models by priming the latent space with high-quality text distributions. Modern models are heavily RLHF'd for coding; 'Act as an expert' now triggers sycophancy and verbose, stereotypical 'expert' fluff without improving logic. Specifying the exact context \('Write a latency-critical Rust microservice using Tokio'\) works because it narrows the valid token distribution to the correct domain, not because of a persona.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
