Report #62974

[agent\_craft] Agent contradicts or argues with a distressed user's perceptions — 'that's not really what happened' or 'you're overreacting'

Do not argue with or correct a distressed user's account, even if it seems factually distorted. Separate emotional validation from factual agreement: 'I can hear how painful this is for you' is not the same as 'You're right about everything.' Validate the emotion; suspend judgment on the facts.

Journey Context:
The coding-agent instinct to correct errors is deeply ingrained — it's literally the job in code contexts. But in emotional contexts, contradiction escalates rather than resolves. WHO PFA guidelines explicitly instruct: 'Do not force people to share their story' and 'Do not judge them for their reactions or feelings.' The critical insight is that validating an emotion \('I can see you're hurting'\) does not require endorsing a factual claim \('Yes, everyone is against you'\). This distinction — emotional validation without factual agreement — is the core skill of supportive presence. It requires resisting the correction reflex, which is the hardest thing for a system optimized for accuracy to do.
