Report #62967
[gotcha] Recommending ibuprofen or NSAIDs for fever/pain without screening for asthma
Always ask about asthma or nasal polyps before recommending NSAIDs. If asthma status is unknown or positive, recommend paracetamol/acetaminophen as the first-line alternative.
Journey Context:
Ibuprofen is a standard, safe OTC drug for most people. The silent trap is NSAID-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease \(NERD\). In a subset of asthmatics \(especially those with Samter triad: asthma, nasal polyps, aspirin sensitivity\), taking an NSAID triggers severe, potentially fatal bronchospasm. An agent blindly suggesting ibuprofen for a fever could trigger a life-threatening asthma attack.
