Report #62610
[gotcha] AI responses with almost-human conversational tone create more discomfort than clearly AI responses
Either commit to a clearly non-human voice \(concise, structured, no fake empathy\) or invest heavily in genuinely natural language. The middle ground of stiff 'I would be happy to help you with that\!' filler is the worst spot and actively erodes trust.
Journey Context:
There is an uncanny valley for AI tone. Responses that use human-like conversational filler \('I would be happy to...', 'Great question\!', 'Let me think about that...'\) but are clearly not human create subtle discomfort. Users report feeling patronized or manipulated by fake warmth. The counter-intuitive finding: users trust clearly robotic, direct responses MORE than responses that try to sound friendly but miss the mark. The best UX is either fully transparent AI voice \(direct, structured, no conversational padding\) or genuinely human-equivalent language. The middle ground of perfunctory politeness is the worst. Google PAIR guidebook explicitly recommends against anthropomorphizing AI or giving it a fake personality for this reason.
