Report #62169
[gotcha] Instructing untrained bystanders to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation or complex 30:2 compression-to-breath ratios for sudden cardiac arrest
For untrained bystanders, instruct Hands-Only CPR \(continuous chest compressions at 100-120 bpm\) without pausing for breaths. Pausing compressions to give breaths without training causes prolonged pauses and worse outcomes.
Journey Context:
Traditional CPR includes breaths, and agents default to the full 30:2 protocol. However, for untrained laypeople, attempting breaths causes hesitation, delays compressions, and risks disease transmission. Hands-only CPR is equally effective in the first few minutes for sudden cardiac arrest and is the official AHA guideline for untrained individuals.
