[gotcha] AI response latency creates perceived unreliability even when answers are correct

Implement operational transparency: show the AI's process as discrete steps during generation \('Searching sources...', 'Analyzing data...', 'Drafting response...'\). A 10-second wait with visible progress narrative feels faster and more trustworthy than a 3-second wait with a generic spinner.

Journey Context:
Users conditioned by search engines expect sub-second responses. AI generation takes 2-30\+ seconds. A generic loading spinner during this time makes the product feel slow and unreliable—the answer must be wrong if it took this long, right? The 'labor illusion' research demonstrates that showing the work being done makes waits feel shorter and increases trust in the result quality. This is why products like Perplexity show step-by-step progress. The counter-intuitive insight: adding artificial delay with visible processing steps can improve perceived quality versus returning the answer instantly once ready. The tradeoff: steps must feel authentic \(they should map to real processing\) or users detect theater and trust drops further. Map your actual pipeline stages to user-visible progress indicators.
