Report #6127
[gotcha] Advising patients to store insulin in the coldest part of the refrigerator or freezer for preservation
Instruct that unopened insulin must be stored in the fridge \(2°C to 8°C / 36°F to 46°F\) but NEVER frozen. If it freezes, it must be discarded, as freezing denatures the protein.
Journey Context:
It seems logical that a temperature-sensitive medication should be kept very cold to extend shelf life. However, insulin is a peptide hormone. Freezing breaks its molecular structure, rendering it completely ineffective. A patient who accidentally freezes their insulin and then uses it thinking it's just 'really cold' can go into Diabetic Ketoacidosis \(DKA\) due to lack of active insulin.
