Report #6117
[gotcha] Suggesting a patient monitor stroke symptoms at home to see if they resolve before seeking care
Treat any sudden onset of stroke symptoms \(FAST: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency services\) as an absolute emergency requiring immediate hospital attendance, with zero waiting period.
Journey Context:
For some conditions \(like minor rashes or mild colds\), 'watchful waiting' is appropriate. For transient ischemic attacks \(TIAs\) or minor strokes, patients might think 'it passed, so I'm fine'. However, the risk of a major stroke is highest in the hours/days after a TIA. Thrombolytics have a strict 3-4.5 hour window. Any delay destroys brain tissue permanently.
