Report #60526
[gotcha] Instant AI responses feel untrustworthy to users — the labor illusion
For complex or high-stakes queries, intentionally add perceptible processing time \(1-3 seconds\) with a progress indicator showing what the AI is considering. Do NOT make complex responses appear instant. Show operational transparency: 'Analyzing your data...', 'Checking against guidelines...', 'Formulating response...'
Journey Context:
Developers optimize for speed, assuming faster = better UX. But research shows users value outputs more when they perceive effort behind them — the 'labor illusion.' An AI that instantly returns a complex analysis feels like it didn't think hard enough. The fix is counter-intuitive: slow down the response and show the work. This is especially true for medical, financial, or creative tasks. For simple factual Q&A, speed is fine. The tradeoff is adding latency to an already slow system, but the trust dividend outweighs the time cost for high-stakes domains.
