Report #59682
[counterintuitive] chain of thought always improves accuracy
Evaluate CoT on a per-task basis. Avoid CoT for tasks requiring fast, intuitive, or strictly memorized responses where verbalizing reasoning introduces noise or post-hoc rationalization.
Journey Context:
CoT is excellent for math and logic, but forcing a model to explain its reasoning can reduce accuracy in tasks relying on implicit pattern recognition \(like sentiment analysis or simple classification\). The model might rationalize a wrong answer \(verbalizer bias\) or get distracted by its own generated reasoning. Zero-shot direct answers often outperform CoT on simple or highly memorized tasks.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
