Report #59599
[gotcha] AI responses that return too fast are trusted less by users
Add operational transparency for substantive queries: show processing steps, a thinking indicator, or progressive disclosure. Never return a complex analytical answer instantaneously with zero UI feedback. Target 1-3 seconds of visible working state for non-trivial queries.
Journey Context:
The instinct is to minimize latency at all costs. But the labor illusion research shows users distrust instant results for complex tasks — they assume the system did not do real work. Showing visible processing increases perceived value and trust even when it adds no real computation time. The tradeoff: you must not add so much artificial delay that it feels slow or patronizing. The sweet spot is brief, informative processing indicators \(not spinners — show what the system is doing\). This only applies to substantive queries; for simple factual lookups, speed is still king.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
