Report #59355

[counterintuitive] Is prompt engineering obsolete with better models

Invest in robust prompt engineering and structured outputs \(like JSON mode or function calling\) as a permanent architectural layer, not a temporary workaround, because model capabilities and prompt sensitivity evolve together.

Journey Context:
The belief is that as models get smarter, they will just understand what we mean. However, as models gain more capabilities \(like tool use, agentic loops, multimodal processing\), the prompt becomes the API for orchestrating these capabilities. Prompt engineering is evolving into software engineering for LLMs \(e.g., system prompts, few-shot examples for structured output, tool definitions\). It is not going away; it is becoming more formalized.
