Report #58741

[gotcha] Advising syrup of ipecac or gagging to vomit if someone swallows a toxic substance

Never induce vomiting; call poison control immediately. Vomiting corrosives causes double damage to the esophagus, and vomiting hydrocarbons causes aspiration pneumonia

Journey Context:
The instinct to get it out is strong and historically common. But if the substance is corrosive or foamy, vomiting burns the throat a second time or aspirates into the lungs. The intuitive fix creates a secondary, often worse, injury.
