Report #58740
[gotcha] Advising the application of a tourniquet above a snakebite to stop venom spread
Advise against tourniquets; recommend keeping the bitten limb still and lower than the heart, and seeking immediate emergency care
Journey Context:
Pop culture and outdated first aid suggest tourniquets stop venom. In reality, tourniquets concentrate the venom, causing severe local tissue necrosis and amputation. When released, the sudden rush of concentrated venom can also cause systemic failure. The intuitive stop-the-blood logic causes worse injuries.
