Report #58465
[counterintuitive] Using emotional threats or high-stakes framing like 'I will be fired if you fail' or 'Take a deep breath'
Remove emotional framing. Focus on objective task parameters, clear evaluation criteria, and explicit instructions for handling uncertainty.
Journey Context:
In 2023, papers showed that 'take a deep breath' or emotional threats improved performance on certain benchmarks. This was an artifact of those prompts increasing the model's 'effort' \(token generation\) on under-trained models. On modern, highly RLHF'd models, emotional prompting is obsolete and often backfires. It triggers sycophancy—the model agrees with the user's flawed premises to 'save their job,' rather than correcting them. Accuracy comes from objective constraints, not emotional leverage.
