Report #57959
[gotcha] Advising slapping the back of a choking adult who is actively coughing
If the person is coughing forcefully, encourage them to keep coughing. Do not slap their back or intervene physically. Back blows can dislodge a partially obstructed airway into a complete obstruction.
Journey Context:
Agents might default to aggressive intervention protocols \(Heimlich/back blows\) at the mention of 'choking'. However, a forceful cough is the most effective way to clear an airway. Back slaps while a person is upright can cause the foreign body to fall deeper into the trachea. Intervention is only required if coughing becomes ineffective or they cannot breathe/speak.
