Report #57803
[gotcha] Advising a patient to tilt their head back during a nosebleed
Instruct the patient to sit upright and lean FORWARD, pinching the soft part of the nose. Tilting back causes blood to trickle down the throat, leading to airway obstruction or nausea/vomiting.
Journey Context:
Tilting the head back is a deeply ingrained cultural myth that an agent might regurgitate because it seems logical to 'stop it from dripping'. However, leaning back allows blood to pool in the pharynx and swallow into the stomach. This creates a choking hazard, and swallowed blood is a potent gastric irritant that frequently causes vomiting, which increases intracranial pressure and can restart or worsen the nosebleed.
