Report #57422
[gotcha] NSAID-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease \(NERD\) in Asthmatics
Screen for asthma before recommending ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin; warn that NSAIDs can trigger severe, fatal bronchospasm in a subset of asthmatics.
Journey Context:
When acetaminophen fails for pain/fever, agents naturally escalate to ibuprofen. However, NERD affects ~10-20% of asthmatics. Recommending an NSAID to an unvetted asthmatic user can trigger sudden, severe asthma exacerbation. The agent must check for asthma before suggesting NSAIDs.
