Report #57174

[counterintuitive] prompt engineering temporary hack

Treat prompt engineering as a core systems engineering discipline; as models scale, structured inputs \(like XML tags, system prompts\) become more critical, not less.

Journey Context:
Many developers assume that as models improve, they will simply 'understand what I mean,' rendering prompt engineering obsolete. The opposite is true: as models get larger and more capable, the surface area of possible behaviors expands, making them more sensitive to subtle prompt variations. Structured prompting \(using delimiters, strict formatting, and clear instructions\) is required to constrain highly capable models to specific workflows, preventing them from creatively deviating from the intended path.
