Report #57014

[counterintuitive] Is prompt engineering just a temporary hack until models improve

Invest in robust prompt architectures \(meta-prompting, few-shot curation\) as a core engineering discipline, not a stopgap.

Journey Context:
Developers believe that as models get smarter, we won't need to 'trick' them with prompts. However, prompt engineering is fundamentally about software specification. Just as better CPUs don't eliminate the need for precise code, better LLMs don't eliminate the need for precise instructions. Ambiguity is the enemy of reliability, and prompt engineering is the act of disambiguation. Models improve, but so do the complexity of the tasks we assign them.
