Report #56835
[gotcha] Advising a user to loosen a tourniquet every 15-20 minutes to let blood flow return to the limb
Once a tourniquet is applied to stop life-threatening bleeding, it must NOT be loosened until definitive surgical care is reached. Note the exact time of application on the limb.
Journey Context:
Older first aid manuals taught periodic loosening to save the limb. This is obsolete and dangerous. Loosening a tourniquet causes reperfusion injury, drops blood pressure precipitously, and often makes it impossible to re-tighten enough to stop the renewed hemorrhage, leading to death. 'Life over limb' is the current doctrine. The trap is outdated training data.
