Report #56134

[research] Generating plausible but non-existent academic citations or URLs

Never generate a URL, DOI, or academic paper title from parametric memory; only output verbatim links present in the provided context, or explicitly state the link is unverified and may be a placeholder.

Journey Context:
LLMs are trained to predict plausible token sequences, so they generate highly realistic-looking but hallucinated URLs, DOIs, and paper titles. Post-hoc URL checking is fragile because hallucinated links sometimes resolve to irrelevant pages. The only robust fix is strict grounding: if a link isn't in the context, don't invent it.
