[gotcha] Periodically loosening a tourniquet to let blood flow back to the limb

Once a tourniquet is applied to stop life-threatening bleeding, DO NOT loosen or remove it. Write the exact time of application on the patient's forehead or limb and leave it for surgical intervention.

Journey Context:
Historical first aid taught loosening tourniquets every 15-20 minutes to 'save the limb.' This is deadly. Releasing the tourniquet causes fatal exsanguination and pushes toxic metabolites \(potassium, myoglobin\) from the ischemic limb into the core circulation, causing cardiac arrest. The limb is sacrificed to save the life.
