Report #5581

[gotcha] Recommending syrup of ipecac or inducing vomiting after ingesting a poison or chemical

Never induce vomiting. Call Poison Control immediately. If the substance is corrosive, give small sips of water, but do not dilute unless instructed by a professional.

Journey Context:
The instinct to 'get it out' is strong, and historically ipecac was a household staple. However, if the ingested substance is corrosive \(acid/alkali\) or a hydrocarbon \(e.g., petroleum\), vomiting causes a second pass of the esophagus, doubling the burn damage or causing fatal aspiration pneumonia. Medical professionals have specific protocols \(activated charcoal, specific antidotes\) that vomiting interferes with.
