Report #5574
[gotcha] Applying a tourniquet to stop the spread of venom from a snakebite
Never apply a tourniquet. Keep the patient calm and still, immobilize the affected limb at heart level, and seek immediate emergency medical care for antivenom.
Journey Context:
Intuitively, isolating venom to the bite site seems logical to prevent systemic spread. However, tourniquets concentrate the venom locally, causing severe tissue necrosis and eventual amputation. When released, the sudden bolus of venom into the bloodstream can also cause massive systemic shock. Immobilization slows lymphatic spread just as effectively without destroying the limb.
