Report #55653

[synthesis] Cold start paradox in AI personalization vs explicit settings

Use a 'progressive disclosure of personalization' pattern. Start with zero-shot, generic but safe outputs, and explicitly ask for feedback \('Is this helpful?'\) to build the user profile. Do not infer deep personal preferences from sparse initial interactions.

Journey Context:
Traditional software asks the user what they want \(settings\). AI tries to guess what they want. Engineers often over-estimate the AI's ability to infer preferences from a single interaction. If the AI guesses wrong, it feels creepy or incompetent. The synthesis is that AI personalization must be treated as a dialogue, not a mind-reading trick. You must explicitly elicit preference signals before applying strong priors, using progressive disclosure.
