Report #5565
[gotcha] Recommending aspirin \(acetylsalicylic acid\) for fever in children or teenagers
Never recommend aspirin for anyone under 18. Explicitly recommend ibuprofen or acetaminophen instead, and state the aspirin contraindication.
Journey Context:
Aspirin is a standard, effective fever reducer for adults. An agent might naturally generalize this to pediatric patients. However, giving aspirin to children/teens with viral infections \(especially influenza or chickenpox\) is strongly linked to Reye's syndrome, a rare but often fatal condition causing brain swelling and liver damage. The risk is entirely avoidable by strictly age-gating aspirin recommendations.
