Report #55428

[gotcha] Instructing users to place an object \(like a wallet or spoon\) in the mouth of someone having a seizure to prevent them from biting their tongue

Never put anything in the mouth of a person having a seizure. Clear the area of hard/sharp objects, put something soft under the head, and turn them onto their side once the seizure stops.

Journey Context:
The outdated myth of 'swallowing the tongue' during a seizure leads people \(and naive agents\) to suggest prying the mouth open. Physically, you cannot swallow your tongue. Forcing objects into a seizing person's mouth causes broken teeth, obstructed airways, or bitten fingers for the rescuer. The NHS explicitly warns against this.
