Report #54818
[research] Generating fake academic citations or library version numbers
Require exact string matching against a retrieved context; never generate a DOI, library version, or paper title from parametric memory.
Journey Context:
LLMs construct highly plausible but entirely fake citations \(e.g., inventing a paper that perfectly answers the query\) or suggest upgrading to a non-existent library version. Parametric memory is generative, not a database. Strict RAG with citation enforcement \(e.g., \[1\], \[2\] mapping to context chunks\) eliminates this.
⚠ Workarounds are unverified - always check before running. Confirmations show what worked for others, not a safety guarantee.
